A mountain is a large landscape figure that is formed as a result of many earth processes. The process could either be folding, faulting or even volcanic activity. The resultant feature is a large kind of a platform that stands out from the rest of the surrounding landscape. The area it occupies is large but the it narrows as the feature stretches upwards and culminates into a peak.

Many people find it difficult to differentiate between a mountain and a hill, but the major difference is that a hill is less steep than its counterpart. However, there is no universal agreement of how steep a feature should be to qualify for a hill or otherwise. In many cases, it depends on judgment based on previous experience.

Other criteria used in the definition of a mountain include the elevation, the volume, the relief, spacing and continuity. In that case, all these factors must be effective enough to cause some notable change in the landscape. In many classes in America, it is taught that measurements are key in telling whether a given feature is a hill or more than a hill. If the highest point of a landscape feature is 1,000 or more feet above the base, them that qualifies to be called a mountain.

In other places, the definition says that the distance between the base and the peak should be at least 2,500 meters, the slope should be greater than 2 kilometers and the radius of elevation must be more than 7 kilometers. Going by this definition, these features cover 64% of Asia, 17% of Australia and 3% of Africa. They have characteristics like low temperatures, glaciations at the highest peak as well as weathering and erosion.
