The Heavenly Ski Resort is one of the most popular resorts in the United States. Located at Lake Tahoe, on the California-Nevada border and offers four base facilities. This resort stretches out over a massive 4,800 acres! It has 30 lifts and a whopping 97 runs.

Heavenly is situated the highest of any other ski resort in South Lake Tahoe. It is owned by Vail Resorts Inc and was purchased by them in 2002. Regardless of the fact that 360″ or nine meters of snow falls in this area annually the Heavenly resort also houses one of the US’s biggest snowmaking systems so you can rest assured if you want to ski and the snowfall hasn’t been so great, you will be catered for.

With ski resorts, the “ski season” generally begins sometime in the middle to late November and lasts until late April, but this time frame is based on the amount of snowfall the area receives. If snowfall isn’t very good, the season may begin later or end sooner. It’s always a good idea to take a look at weather statistics for the ski resort you plan to visit so you don’t end up with your ski trip being cut short or cancelled.

If you plan on flying in, the closest airport to Heavenly is in Reno, Nevada. Luckily, the resort has a shuttle bus that runs to and from the airport. There are a variety of accommodations to choose from, which vary enough in style and price to suit every family’s needs.

In Heavenly news, a 10-year plan has been approved to allow for continuous improvements to be made to the resort. One of the additions includes The Powderbowl Lodge, which is a skier bridge which will be able to seat up to 950 skiers. Other additions include two new trails which will be the steepest trails on the resort. They also plan to implement an environmentally-safe drainage system as well as a fleet of low-emission buses. So, if you’re planning a ski trip, Heavenly, as well as popular Aspen ski resorts, should definitely be on your list of possible places to vacation at!

More and more people are tempted each year to go to an Asian beach resort. That’s no wonder really. There are a handful of very appealing destinations in Asia, from the clear waters in Thailand to the beach resorts in Philippine.

They offer a variety of services that have increased in quality due to the fact that tourism is an important source of income for many of those countries. For example, in many of those beach resorts, diving enthusiasts can practice their favorite sport in crystal waters teeming with colorful fish. It sounds like a description of heaven itself, but this isn’t far fetched at all.

But the impressive scenery doesn’t stop here. Golden soft beaches stretching for miles, the tropical touches, the proximity of mountains in many of those areas, are just a few glimpses of what Asian beach resorts can offer.

In short, Asia has become a hot destination. Another big advantage is the fact that everything is cheap, hotels, food, everything included here. Of course, there are a variety of services, and those who are more costly offer better services, like anywhere in the world actually. But as a general trait, it is indeed pretty cheap.

Also, as a note worth mentioning, remember to make the most out of your visit by enjoying each place’s cultural richness. You will not lack that anywhere you go in Asia, and you will also find out that people are especially hospitable. All you have to do is ask, and you will be answered in the most pleasant manner.

The fauna is also overwhelming in Asia. There is an entire array of colorful birds that will be the delight of bird-watchers. If you are not one, then you can just enjoy their presence and take a few photos. That will make a nice memory.

Cruising is another favorite activity of tourists when in Asia. The water is always very close, and be it a cruise on a big river or a cruise out on the open ocean, the choice is yours to take. In Bangkok, for example, if you are booked in a hotel that is near the Chao Phraya River, you can serve the dinner on a river cruise.

Marketplaces are another exotic attraction that make a whole afternoon go by in an instant. Cheap and exotic things make the shoppers’ delight. And there is anything you could possibly want in one of those places, and I do mean anything. Make sure you visit one of those places too, when in Asia.

The increase in the quality of services is obvious. When you get booked at a hotel, you can expect full services and quality. And hotels come with a variety of facilities, many of them offering private beaches, even golf terrains, elephant rides, etc. That also depends on the placement of the hotel, so that’s why you need to do a little bit of research.

As a final note, if you haven’t already tasted the amazing Asian cuisine, it’s about time you do. And while you are in Asia itself, why no profit from it and taste the original recepies that are so famous?

The conclusion is: you can never go wrong with Asia. The advantages I presented you are only a few and are general, the truth is that you will get a lot more surprises when you actually get there, depending on the place you chose for your holiday. So when in doubt about a holiday place, an Asian beach resort is your answer.

On my path to becoming a world champion skier I received a lot of help from others. First from my uncle who skillfully guided me past the usual bad habits that I could see other skiers weren’t getting past.

I first skied at age 14. By the time I was 20 I had won my first world championship. I attribute my rapid success to the fact that I seldom received bad advice. And by the time that I had outgrown the wise tutelage of my Uncle I knew enough to recognize and avoid bad advice.

I had no idea how much bad advice gets spread around until I started teaching professionally. Now, decades later, I know how unworkable it is to seek advice from the average skier because nearly everyone wants to help even when their help is misguided.

There are only about 3 dozen concepts that are important to know about skiing. However there are about as many that are commonly believed and/or used that are more of a hindrance than a help. The worst example of this would be; “bending over feels safer than standing tall.”

So here’s a warning; Just because someone can ski better than you, doesn’t ean that he/she knows enough about the sport to give you advice that will help you.

If you’re a skier and you are not getting better every day on the mountain you have accepted bad advice, have bad habits or both. Here’s my best advice; Choose your coaches like your happiness depends on it.

Most people quit this extreme sport because it scares them or their not having enough fun to justify the expense and effort of it. However this is the most exhilarating and beautiful sport in the world if you are a competent skier.

Bob Salerno,

2X world champion

When it’s the time of the year where you need to go out to the snow capped mountains with you snow skis, then it’s definitely winter time. You need not be an Olympian to appreciate skiing. All you need is to try it and you will understand why millions of people are getting crazy over the sport both as a hobby and for competition. Skiing can be fun. You can do it with friends and with family as well, you just have to possess the right attitude and the equipment to make it a truly wonderful adventure.

A Need-to-Know Tip

Choosing the snow skis for first-time skiers can be intimidating, but with the right guidance and assistance, purchasing one can be easily pulled through. It is very important to note that there are different snow skis for different type of skiers. Taller and heavier skiers may require different ski as with lighter and shorter ones. Back in the old days, skis can be so large making it difficult to get you the right balance. But nowadays, snow skis are made to fit the person who is going to use them, smaller skis are known to be faster and more stable.

Snow Skis for Different Ages and Gender

If you are a man, then pick snow skis that are made for your gender. This is the basic consideration to think about when buying the skis. Men and women have different ski types to use because of the difference in body built. Women’s skis are built lighter and flexible to compensate its body weight, the same with children who need to get equipment that matches their own height and weight. The height and weight of the skier is the determining factor in getting the right and proper ski length, they need to be proportionate so that everything is well distributed.

Skills And Styles

The type of snow skis also differ depending on what level the skier is, and it is not practical to get one that is beyond or below the skill level you are currently in. Try to stay away with the thought that you can buy a ski that is beyond your level thinking that you might improve later on. For beginners, for instance, the ski needs to be at least shorter by an inch or two than the body. Intermediate skiers need a ski that is closer to their height, while those advanced skiers must choose a ski with an added length, from five to ten centimeters.

Longer skis move faster so that if you need speed, go for the longer one to help you float during skiing. Below is a guide to be used in getting the right skis:

- Skis used for recreation only should be just tall enough to hit the skier’s chin or eyes or in between.
- Mountain skis should stand between the nose and forehead.
- Free ride skis should be eye level or a little taller.
- Freestyle skis must be nose level.
- Backcountry skis are the widest and the biggest and would depend on the skiing level.

I relish winter snow blanketing the landscape. Luckily, I’ve found a sport that allows me to get exercise and travel on skis without skiing downhill at a resort with lift lines. There exist downhill ski resorts that have a separate area of trails for Nordic skiers. The term "Nordic" covers not only cross-country, but telemark and ski jumping.

These are trails that are usually groomed creating a flat, grooved surface. The pattern will usually appear like giant corduroy fabric. The advantage of a groomed trail is that you will glide completely on top of the snowpack while the groove directs you. If you go on an ungroomed trail you will still be able to ski it. At times you may sink in it some, but you can move forward through it. You don’t tend to sink much into snow because your weight is distributed over your skis.

This activity is family-friendly. Infants and toddlers can ride in a backpack or sled. Grandparents can go as it is almost like a gentle walk. Teenagers can go fast with the skate ski technique. Even your family dog can run along as some Nordic Centers welcome them.

With over 350 cross-country ski areas in North America there may well be one near you. This sport uses natural movements and has a rather short learning curve. The biggest challenge for a beginner is to maintain your balance while shuffling along–think standing with ice skates.

The skis are quite thin and long; but with time you will learn to balance. It is an aerobic sport as you will experience after you’ve covered some distance. Stay on marked trails and obey posted signs, as in some areas avalanches are a risk. There are two different movement techniques.

Classic refers to the diagonal stride where you push each foot forward in long, graceful strides. Your arms with poles also help you push you along. Skating is the other technique done on a consistent packed surface where you make an open V pattern instead of straight ahead. You push one ski to the side and glide while using powerful pole strokes to assist. It makes the quickest way to slide for you racer types!

The equipment needed is lightweight and all of it can be carried over your shoulders. The boots are only ankle high and are held onto the ski by a binding which secures the toe but allows the heel to lift freely up off the ski.

The shoes detach from the skis allowing you to walk around comfortably. Poles similar to downhill ski poles propel you along when skiing. Skis fall into 2 categories. Waxless have bases with ridges cut into them for grip. Waxable skis are the traditional kind that need you to apply special waxes to fine-tune your ski to match snow conditions. We don’t want you sliding around aimlessly out there now!

Basic Moves

Okay, moving right along, we’ve come to some basic instruction on technique.

Kick and Glide creates the basic rhythym of classic skiing. Keep your knees and ankles flexed and your upper body forward. Push a foot forward and pressure the center of the ski so it gets firm contact with the snow. Now bring that heel down. Next, stride forward with your other foot.

Snowplow is used when you want to slow down or stop. Form a closed V shape by bringing your front ski tips together. At the same time shift your weight toward the insides of your skis. Bend your knees some.

Herringbone is used to walk on uphill portions where you cannot get enough momentum to push yourself up with your poles. Walk straight up with your front ski tips facing out. Steering gives you control over going to the left or right. Pressing more on your right ski causes you to go left. Pressing more on your left ski causes you to go right.

Half Wedge provides a little slowing power on the downhill. While in the groomed track angle out only one ski and shift your weight on that ski toward its outside edge. Leave the other ski in its track still pointing straight. Remember that Nordic skis, like downhill skis, have a mechanism that allows the ski to release from your boot for your safety. You just have to fetch the darn thing out of the snow when it does that!
