You’ve heard about the skiing at Lake Tahoe or Mammoth, but one of the best ski or snowboard experiences you’ll ever have awaits you at Bear Valley, where the crowds are few, but the thrills are many.

While not on a par with Squaw Valley or Heavenly or other major California ski resorts, the Bear Valley ski area is still a prime candidate for a weekend or even an extended skiing vacation. As we discovered in early February, Bear Valley offers a surprisingly complete ski vacation experience – no frills, to be sure, but still rewarding and well worth the trip deep into the Sierra Nevada range.

If designer clothing stores, zillion-dollar condos, and Hollywood-style glitz are part of your criteria for a ski vacation, this ski area might not be the best choice. If wide-open ski runs, no lift lines and plenty of groomed snow are more important to you, then by all means give Bear Valley a try.

Coming originally from the Pacific Northwest, we could not help but compare Bear Valley to one of our favorite ski areas in Washington state – a place called Mission Ridge in a town named Wenatchee. The population in that part of the state is sparse compared with the big ski areas near Seattle, so Mission Ridge is able to offer wide-open skiing runs most days of the week.

Similarly, Bear Valley is less accessible than the many larger ski areas in the Lake Tahoe area. Bay area and Sacramento residents can drive Interstate 80 to the Tahoe area and find a selection of ski resorts a short distance off the interstate. To reach this ski area, you have to drive two-lane roads through the foothills and mountains for close to 100 miles.

But when you get there, most skiers and snowboarders will find it’s worth it. Our mid-week skiing was some of the best we’ve experienced – plenty of wide-open, groomed terrain perfect for intermediates and serviced by a number of lifts where there seemed to never be lines. It was ski down the run, get right on the chair and do it all again and again until just a few hours into our day we were growing exhausted. We probably skied in four hours what it would take us a full day to do at a resort with moderate lift lines.

There are no gondolas or high-speed quad chairlifts at Bear Valley, although there are 10 lifts altogether, mostly doubles and triples. About 1280 acres are available for skiing and snowboarding; some 100 acres are in an area where they can make snow – although at 7,750 feet, it’s likely Mother Nature will supply all the snow you need.

We mentioned the intermediate skiing because that’s our favorite – but rest assured this ski area has many black diamond or expert ski runs for those looking for more of a challenge. The day lodge is situated mid-mountain with lifts going both up the mountain to 8495 feet, and coming to the lodge from the lower part of the mountain. Most of the expert runs are located on the lower mountain.

The area’s day lodge also was wide open and easy to navigate. Instead of masses of people waiting in line to get their food and find a place to sit, we stepped right up and got our cooked-to-order Philly cheesesteak sandwiches in just a few minutes. And there was no shortage of menu options – lots of different types of food from sandwiches to Asian cuisine, from soups and salads to major meals.

But the Bear Valley experience is much more than a daytrip – or at least it should be given the time it takes to get to the ski area. For our trip we booked lodging at the Bear Valley Lodge, one of just a few hotel-type facilities near the mountain. Located about three miles from the mountain, the Bear Valley Lodge seems to be the hub of activity in the area and proved to be a good choice for accommodations. While showing some of its age – it was built in the 60’s – the lodge proved to be a comfortable, convenient base of operations. A ski shuttle bus will take you to the mountain, and you can even ski all the way back to the lodge.

When we say comfortable, we are not comparing the lodge to the high-end condos you find at most major ski resorts. The rooms at Bear Valley Lodge are more like a motel unit with two double beds a bath area and a TV/entertainment area that included HBO. But small touches – such as the bay window looking out onto the snowy landscape or the pine furniture – helped to make this feel much cozier than a motel room.

The four floors of rooms at the Bear Valley Lodge look out onto the Cathedral Lounge, a large open space in the middle of the lodge that offers guests a place to sit and read and enjoy the fire in the massive stone fireplace. Photos are mounted along the walls depicting the history of the lodge and Bear Valley ski area. Celebrities such as Spider Savich, Claudine Longet, Merv Griffin and several others are shown skiing or otherwise enjoying Bear Valley.

Adjacent to the lounge are several shops including an old-fashioned general store – with a deli to get quick sandwiches and soups – and a surprisingly complete ski shop with all of the latest ski equipment, clothing and accessories. But keep in mind this is not the type of resort where you can spend hours shopping when you’re not on the slopes; your down time here most likely will be spent in front of the fire reading a good book.

During our brief stay we dined in the lodge’s Grizzly Lounge – mainly because the other lodge restaurant, the Creekside Dining Room, was closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The lounge food was good and included a few menu items from the Creekside. We did learn that the Creekside has recently employed a well-educated and accomplished chef that has proven both creative and popular with guests – so we were disappointed we didn’t get a chance to sample the Creekside cuisine.

We also enjoyed a meal down at BaseCamp, a lodge that is just a short walk from the Bear Valley Lodge and the only other hotel-style lodging this close to the ski area. We enjoyed our meal at BaseCamp where we got to know an English waitress who had come to Bear Valley simply because the skiing is so good. The BaseCamp, incidentally, offers the lowest cost rooms in the area with “bathroom down the hall.”

There are also condo and cabin rentals available in the Bear Valley area, as well as the Tamarack Lodge further west on Highway 4. Prices in general will be less at BaseCamp, moderate at the Bear Valley Lodge and Tamarack, and more when you rent an entire vacation home.

While in the area, there are several small towns and attractions that are worth a stop if you have the time. To reach Bear Valley in winter, you’ll be traveling through the historical town of Angel’s Camp and then a similar but smaller Gold Rush town called Murphys.

But our suggestion would be to allow plenty of time for skiing. You’ll want to ski or board Bear Valley just as long as the weather – and your legs – will hold out.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Bear Valley Ski Resort is on Highway 4, about 52 miles from the foothills town of Angel’s Camp, and 130 miles from Sacramento.

WHAT: Bear Valley is a throwback to skiing in the ’60’s and ’70’s – no high-speed quads or gondolas but lots of wide open groomed terrain in a gorgeous setting.

WHEN: Winter always means where is lots of snow for skiing as well as many other snow sports; the area also is a popular summer recreation area with numerous lakes, hiking trails and a pristine forest.

WHY: It’s refreshing to ski where there are no lift lines and little pretense – most of the “beautiful people” went to Colorado; the home-growns stayed here. Economically, this ski vacation is quite affordable.

“I will probably pack some fruit snacks?”

“Do please.”

When stroke eight, after eating meals and packing our truck, we were ready to go hiking. We came on the road and went in the direction of Convict Lake. We saw that the sun has just appeared behind the mountains on the horizon. I was fascinated at the time it shed its pink radiance at the valley before us.

Once we stopped not far from the trail head and gave out the water among us. My brother, called Daniel, bore the pack, I bore a bota bag, mother, her name is Sarah, bore her fanny pack and a couple of bottles with water, and my father, Dan, bore the Camera and a his bota bag.

In a little while, we got on the trail. In an hour of a climbing my brother, Daniel, was ahead with me following closely behind him. Mother and dad were at the back of us nearly 100 yards. I gazed to my left at the shiny azure lake. There were one or two rented boats and there also was a party-boat. The beams of the sun were mirrored off the lake creating a breathtaking golden gleam. I looked down at the dirty follow I was going on; it was incredible that I was walking just outside the former active volcano. My eyes leisurely ventured to the small plant, sagebrush, that was on my right. Ten minutes ago, I never supposed I’d meet sagebrush at this place. But after that once more, Mammoth is only a high desert, with gigantic mountains on all sides.

Being a poor student doesn’t mean you have to put your travel plans on hold. In fact traveling as a student, whether it be at home or abroad, can be done on a small budget as there are many deals there for you to take advantage of.

Use the fact that you are a student to get discounts. Before you go traveling get yourself a student discount card and use it. The ISIC (International Student Identity Card) will get you concessions on tourist attractions, food and shopping among other things. This card is for any student regardless of age or for youth aged between twelve and twenty six and can be used in over one hundred countries. This student discount card comes complete with an international phone card and a voice mail account. This ensures you can be contacted while traveling.

There is also the International Student Exchange Card (ISEC) which gives travel discounts across the globe. Discounts can be as much as fifty percent on such things as museums, movies, transport options and accommodation. Not only will this card save you a lot of money while traveling, it also provides other benefits including assistance with medical expenses and evacuation fees if caught in a disaster. You also have access to toll free emergency phone service world wide should you need help in urgent situations. The ISE card will also provide you with airline bankruptcy protection. If you book your flights through an ISE agency, you will be covered if your carrier goes bust.

And finally there is the International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) which you can get if you are under twenty six years of age. There is a small charge associated with this card, but the benefits outweigh this cost when traveling. This card will get you discounts in about fifty countries including airfare discounts, accommodation reductions and entry in to tourist attractions at a reduced rate.

Other student cards that offer discounts are transport cards such as the STA Travel card or Young Persons railcards issued in the United Kingdom. But the offers don’t stop there for students. In western countries it is wise to ask if there are student discounts in any place where you are about to part with your money. Discounts can be given by restaurants, retailers (on just about anything) and hostels. Not all places advertise that they give discounts so if you don’t ask, you’ll never find out what savings you can make.

Students aren’t the only lucky ones to get fabulous travel discounts. Seniors also have deals available to them while traveling as do group travelers and families. Investigate what discounts apply to you and ensure you take advantage of them.

If you are on your journey back in time, then perhaps there is no better place to choose for a walk through the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Here centuries of wind and water eroded a deep canyon, where dinosaurs once moved millions of years ago and which the scholars of today enjoy some of the largest fossil deposits in the world, including the remains of saber-toothed tigers , three horses toes and turtles old.

Close to the picnic in a ConataPage Revel like a pig, remains active today announced that scientists have discovered the bones of a large hornless rhinoceros known as Subhyracodon, and if you’re lucky, you might be able to speak with one of the paleontologists, as you walk through the area.

Not all of the Badlands National Park is a barren moonscape and the park as well as about 64,000 acres of desert green wild sheep and buffalo roamed the American and the headquarters of the rapidFox ferrets and black feet, among many other creatures. You also see deer and antelope around this part of the park.

Migrate within the 240,000 hectare park is a popular activity with courses ranging from very light hiking trails for the beginner up to the challenge even experienced hikers. But whatever your level of experience, the end result of getting to the jagged peaks and views of the plains below areworth giving in order to arrive.

A fascinating area that deserves a visit to the neighborhood stronghold, of which half is in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. During the Second World War this area was used as a shooting range and this section of the park is now home to the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, where we look at buildings that once housed one of America’s defense systems, and more important.

For thirty years during the Cold War, theseThe plants have been around the clock, and today are home to a fascinating museum, where a plant still in control and an underground launching silos can completely disarm a nuclear missile now see.

Another unique feature of the Badlands National Park is home to the settlers built sod blocks and heated by buffalo chips. Although the time of the great Dust Bowl in 1930 finally drove the settlers out of the country, much of the evidence of the braveThe fight that made many years ago, remains today.

Badlands National Park is a wonderful place to hike with their colors and golden sandy beaches and the blue sky and offers many opportunities for hikers and Avid amateurs alike.
South America is a continent of extremes, and there is not just one, but thousands of reasons to explore the human and natural wonders of this remarkable landmass. South America’s expansive human history is visible through some of the best preserved ruins in the world. The fusion of Spanish, Portuguese and native cultures is evident in the distinctive art, food and music of the 12 independent countries.

Though it was the last continent to be inhabited, South America has a long and delicate history of flourishing indigenous cultures before European arrival in the 16th century. Archeological sites in Peru reveal the practice of human sacrifice and other perplexing traditions by the Moche people who lived there 2000 years ago. South America’s most illustrious ancient people, the Inca, held their capital in modern day Cusco and sprinkled the Andes with remnants of their terraced farming and architecture. Machu Picchu, at 7,710 feet, is the best preserved and most breathtaking Inca town, well worth the 4 day hike along the Inca Trail (the less eager can opt for the train ride).

The Sky is the Limit

When it comes to breaking records, South America is the place to see. The massive north-south continent is spread through nearly every climate zone imaginable, which makes for very dynamic travel. The world’s highest water fall, Angels Falls, cascades over 3,200 feet in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park. The Amazon River, which winds across the north through Brazil, is the largest river in the world by volume while the Amazon Rainforest is the largest existing rainforest. Travel along the Andes, the world’s longest mountain range but make sure not to lose your way in Chile or you might end up in the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert. Catch your breath at 3,600 meters while visiting the highest capital city of La Paz, Bolivia. Then, gather your arctic gear and head south to Ushuaia in Argentina, which is – you guessed it – the world’s southernmost city! Along the way, stop by the steppes of Patagonia, which happens to be the cleanest place on earth aside from Antarctica. South America is also home to the stunning diversity of Darwin’s Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) and the most remote island on earth, Easter Island (Chile) with its mysterious stone head sculptures and an inexplicably large population of Pacific Islanders.

South America also offers the comforts and luxuries of modern metropolitan life in any of the countries you choose to explore. Pick up the pace in Brazil’s bustling Rio de Janeiro or immerse yourself in the cosmopolitan chic of Buenos Aires, Argentina, while still gaining an appreciation for the past in these remarkable historic cities. From big city life and resort towns to tropical rainforests and mountain peaks, there is no better place to embark on your world travels than South America, a true melting pot of culture, history and geographic phenomena.

The Canadian Rockies are known for scenic splendor in a pristine environment, where nature remains unspoiled and opportunities for wildlife viewing abound. The best means of enjoying the panoramic sights of the Canadian Rockies is to travel to the famed national parks by luxury rail which combines the best in first-class service with phenomenal scenery. Once there, stay at a first-class resort to experience the Canadian Rockies up close and personal.

Each major mountain range of the world is known for its scenic splendor and the Canadian Rockies are no exception. The Canadian Rockies are a must-see location for travelers who enjoy the majesty of mountain ranges or for anyone who desires to be counted among the well-traveled world explorers. For over 125 years, savvy travelers have taken advantage of the superior opportunities to view the panoramic scenery of the Canadian Rockies through luxury train excursions.

The historic trains of Royal Canadian Pacific (RCP) offer a luxury travel experience like no other. At the 2006 World Travel Awards ceremony RCP won the “World’s Leading Luxury Train” award, winning over such notable train experiences such as the famed European Orient Express and The Blue Train of South Africa. RCP guests can be assured of five-star luxury service in an intimate atmosphere as only 32 guests are onboard each rail excursion. Chartered individual tours can be arranged for the ultimate in privacy and service.

The fully restored railcars hail from the 1920’s, the era of luxury travel of such notable society names as Rockefeller, Carnegie, Churchill and the British Royal Family. Wealthy individuals traveled to the famed lodge on Lake Louise to spend the summer season in the cool natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Travelers seeking the best in luxury travel can relive the elegant lifestyle of the pre-war American and British elite, admiring the unchanged scenery of this majestic part of the world.

The Royal Canadian Pacific train originates in Calgary in the province of Alberta. The tour package includes limousine service between the airport, hotel and train locations as well as gourmet dining experiences in Calgary before and after the tour. RCP provides first-class amities and service from beginning to end.

Another well-known train service to the highlights of the Canadian Rockies, the Rocky Mountaineer, travels between Vancouver, British Columbia on the west coast, to Calgary with stops at the popular tourist destinations of Whistler, British Columbia, and Jasper or Banff in Alberta. Travelers originating or terminating at Vancouver can easily extend their scenic experience with an Alaskan cruise which includes whale watching and spectacular views of Alaska’s famed glaciers.

The Rocky Mountaineer takes a 2-day journey to the national parks at Jasper and Banff and features glass domed bi-level rail cars. Travelers enjoy the panoramic views from the second storey. Gold Leaf Service provides seated first-class dining en-route. Overnight accommodations and dinner are provided at a moderate hotel. While not the award-winning luxury trip of RCP, the Rocky Mountaineer provides an alternate means of reaching the famed tourist spots of the Canadian Rockies from the west coast of Canada.

A knowledgeable travel consultant can combine the train trip with a stay at a luxury resort nestled in the pristine forests of the Canadian Rockies. There are any number of modern first-class premier resorts that provide tourists with upscale accommodations and service nestled in the stunning forests near the numerous clear lakes of the area. Anyone seeking an eco-friendly luxury travel experience in a peaceful and private spot in the world need look no further than a Canadian Rockies adventure.

I had a blissful nights sleep due to the rocking of the train and woke to the most spectacular mountain views imaginable. High mountain peaks, laden with snow and “snow ghosts’ everywhere (trees so covered in snow they look like white ghosts). Breakfast was a feast with preserves, orange juice, tea and coffee on offer and three menu options to choose from, and there was a load of food too. The Canadian portion sizes are similar to the USA I’m quickly realizing.

I spent my morning looking at the stunning scenery from the luxury of the dome car or the private comfort of my room. We had to stop a number of times along the way for the express trains with cargo which have right of way, which allowed us time to take photos without the movement of the train. At around 11am we stopped at a little town called Clearwater which has a general store and not much else but we all enjoyed hopping out into snow for the first time and had a few snowball fights for good measure -how old are we again?? We even got our conductor in on the act!

Oh dear, it’s 1.30pm and we have been advised to get ready to disembark - who would have thought I wouldn’t want to hop off a train. This journey has been like travelling through a fairytale – the cabin, the staff, the train, the scenery, the wildlife – WOW, WOW, WOW. I had no idea how stunning Canada was – this is like my dreams on steroids!

We roll into Jasper and disembark, where my next adventure begins…

Major highways are being built, improvements in communication by rail and especially domestic flights have wasted a lot of glamor to one of the stars makes time travel.

But What is Route 66?. Route 66 is a highway that was begun in 1926 to unite the scattered lands of the western United States with the East. It was not until 1938 when I finish Route 66. Before that cross the country from coast to coast was extremely complicated. Before 1867, the railroad was quicker and easier to navigate to the southern tip of South America and back.

Route 66 began its journey in Chicago (See hotels in Chicago) (Lake Michigan), across Illinois, Missouri and Kansas to get to Oklahoma, where it turned to cross Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to end in California. The final destination was in the Plasy of Santa Monica in Los Angeles. In total 4000 kilometers long.

Route 66, was one of the major drivers of the American economy during those years, since its path is built numerous service stations, gas stations and hotels that helped the country economically.

Route 66 has been replaced by new modern highway, but there are still stretches of intact legs of what was the original Route 66. Arizona and California are the states that retain the major sections of the original layout.

If you’re thinking about making a Coast to Coast, following the path 66, there are some forums where people discuss experiences already. For more information please visit the Historic Route 66.
