Australia is an isolated country located between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean. The continent is almost the same size as the contiguous 48 states of the USA. With Canberra as its capital, Australias unique plant life, marine life, and wildlife make it an interesting tourist destination for those who can afford it. The low crime rate makes Australia an ideal place to enjoy a vacation without having to worry about personal security more than what is normally necessary. Outback exploration, Great Barrier Reef snorkeling, Fraser Island camping activities, and Uluru (Ayers Rock) sight seeing are among the many tourist attractions available in Australia. With the aforementioned things in mind, I will construct some useful travel tips and information for those planning on making it to the wild outback.

1.Travel Documentation If you are planning to enter Australia, you will need a valid tourist visa. Australian tourist visas can usually be obtained at your local Australian embassy or online, assuming that your current passport has not and will not expire during the time you plan on spending in the country. This visa is usually entered into your passport before you enter the country and is valid for 3 to 6 months.

2.Money Matters As is with most places that are modern and up to date, plastic can prove to be the best and most easy method of payment. Visa, MasterCard, and most ATM cards are accepted as long as they carry either the INTERLINK, MAESTRO, EUROCARD, CIRRUS, PLUS, or STAR international ATM mark. However, as a traveler please familiarize yourself with the fees or service charges that are involved with using your card at a foreign location; and yes they do have ATM machines in most major towns. If you plan on using travelers checks, please understand that you will more than likely be charged a fee or commission when exchanging them; because they are usually only cashable at banks and larger hotels and nowhere else. Changing foreign currency can be done at most banks or at the foreign exchange kiosks at the international airports.

3.Transportation A good way of getting around, is the nice little invention called the rent a car. Please make sure that you have an international drivers license if you plan on using a car rental and arent sure if your regular license will be accepted. Remember, all traffic drives on the left hand side of the road in Australia. If you plan on outback exploration that will require driving on roads that are not main roads, please thoroughly check that all things are working properly on your vehicle. Also, let someone know ahead of time the details of where you are going so that everybody can take the necessary emergency precautions if you do not return on time. And remember that in most country locations; animals sometimes congregate in the road, and quickly approaching head lights can easily confuse animals so that they will not know which way to go. So please be very careful.

4.The Sun and its Heat The sun in Australia can get very hot and carries high UV light levels so it can easily be compared to desert like conditions. It is illegal to leave animals or small children locked in vehicles while the whether is hot, this can also result in a fine being issued. It is a good practice to use SPF 30 or better sunscreen in these type of conditions to prevent damage.

5.Going Swimming – Whether it is the Great Barrier Reef, The Ningaloo Reef, or the Golden Surf; the beach and ocean is an integral part of Australian life and Australian tourism. Please be informed that there are poisonous and deadly creatures lerking in these waters such as the box jellyfish, coral snakes, stone fish, sharks, and many others that are known to cause death. It is wise to swim only in flagged areas that are near beaches that are regularly patrolled. Sometimes crocodiles swim in salt water when they are changing habitat, so it is a good idea to know what you could be up against. Heed all warning signs when they are seen. And remember that the Australian surf is rough and there are dangerous rip tides that are capable of making swimming difficult and deadly.

6.Important information to know If an ambulance, police, or fireman is needed then the number to dial is 000. North American electrical appliances will require an voltage converter adapter socket to work in Australia, because the Australian electrical supply is 240/250 volts compared to the North American 110/115 volts.

You are now ready for your journey to the wild outback and beyond. Please be safe in your travels.

Article by Lena Hawthorne

One of the things you can do when you have a cheap travel insurance plan is take the Ghan across the outback and through the heart of this great country. This journey by train will take you from one edge of the continent, to the outback, and then to the other end. As you spend three days aboard the train, you will discover how diverse the landscape is. Witness it change from lush, sub-tropic environments to mystical, barren deserts.

The Ghan, then known as the Port Augusta to Government Gums Railway, was started in 1878 and was eventually finished in 1929. The new one that people who take out Australia travel insurance to ride was completed in the early 1980s and is located approximately 160 kilometres west of the old line. The reason for the relocation of the track was to prevent washout due to the rains and also to lessen travel time.

Running twice weekly, the train operates between Adelaide, Alice Springs, and Darwin on the Adelaide-Darwin railway. The reason why the ride is called the Ghan is due to the fact that it is the shortened version of the Afghan Express. The nickname was given to the express passenger service of the Commonwealth Railways in 1923 by one of the crews who worked on the train line. It was given in honour of the Afghan camel drivers who first came to Australia in the late 19th century to help carve out new paths into the then unexplored interior of the country.

Before you hop aboard the Ghan, you will want to make sure that you get an Australia travel insurance plan. A very good reason for getting one is in case you eat something that does not agree with your stomach and you need to be brought to the nearest hospital, the train will have to make a stop somewhere along the way and you will need the services of an ambulance to take you there. Having travel insurance assures you that you will get the necessary medical attention.

Another reason why you need this is in case one of your personal belongings gets left behind at the train station. What if you had left behind by accident a bag that contained your digital single lens reflex camera? If this happened, then you would not have anything to take pictures of the marvellous sights along the way. A cheap travel insurance plan can replace your camera at the end of your journey. While you may have lost your camera, you can take comfort in the fact that its full value will be refunded to you because you were prepared.

One final reason why an Australia travel insurance plan can help you out is in case you miss your train. This has happened to many people before, for one reason or another. They end up getting to the station late or they have to cancel for personal reasons, like a death in the family. Having cheap travel insurance can help you get a refund on your tickets and get them rescheduled for a later date. This will help you get through an already difficult situation.

Riding the Ghan can be one of the most thrilling adventures you can make while you are touring Australia. Make sure you have an Australia travel insurance plan that will protect you as you go on this iconic journey.

Ask any visitor to Australia what they want to see, and they’re likely to name the same old places. The bright lights of Sydney, the rugged beauty of the Ayers Rock, and the sparkling beaches of the Gold Coast are well-known tourist magnets. But why would you want to go where everyone else is? Australia offers so many other exciting tourist destinations just off the beaten track.

Many tourists go to this country with a goal of seeing the Australia Outback, but few travel as far north as Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. But it’s worth the effort for nature lovers and those looking to learn more about Australia’s indigenous heritage. Arnhem Land spans a whopping 97, 000 square kilometers, and with fewer than 20,000 residents it’s a great place to escape from throngs of tourists visiting more popular areas.

A four-wheel drive safari is a great way to explore Arnhem Land. There’s no better way to get up close and personal with some of the locals than a croc-spotting mangrove cruise. The colonial ruins at Victoria Settlement and Fort Wellington and the indigenous communities of the Gove Peninsula offer an insight into the region’s cultural heritage. Or you can take it easy with a massage in one of the area’s tropical spas.

May to October is the ideal time to visit Arnhem Land, as the weather is cool and dry. From November to April, some areas may be inaccessible due to the tropical storms.

Airnorth flies from Darwin to the Gove Peninsula, Milingimbi, and Groote Eylandt. Arnhem Land is private land so all visitors are required to get a permit from the Northern Land Council before visiting. If you’re traveling with a tour, this will probably be organized for you. Otherwise, you can obtain a permit from the Council. These take at least 10 days to process.

Travelers looking for a place to kick back and enjoy unique wildlife, picturesque beaches, and delicious food need look no further than Kangaroo Island, located just off the South Australian coast.

More than one third of the island is national parklands, so it’s the perfect home for Australia’s native creatures. Of course Kangaroo Island is famous for its kangaroos, but that’s not all. Sea lions and fur seals happily sun themselves on the sand at the Seal Bay Aquatic Reserve, and if you venture out at night you’ll probably spot fairy penguins hiding amongst rocks on the coastline. Tourists can also expect to see koalas, wallabies, goannas, echidnas, possums, and platypuses in their native environment.

Kangaroo Island is a must for lovers of the great outdoors. Bush walking, yachting, scuba diving, bird watching, swimming, and sand boarding are just some of the activities offered on the island.

After a day’s sightseeing, there’s nothing better than enjoying the delicious food offered in Kangaroo Island’s main towns, Kingscote and Penneshaw. As you’d expect from an island destination, the seafood is not to be missed.

Kangaroo Island is beautiful to visit at any time of the year. However, if you want to scuba dive or snorkel, it’s best to travel between November and April when the weather is warm.

Getting there is easy. Kangaroo Island Sealink’s ferries make regular trips from South Australia’s Cape Jervis. They’ve also got plenty of room for your car if you want to drive when you get there. Alternatively, Regional Express Airlines and Air South Regional regularly fly from Adelaide to Kingscote.

Tourists often overlook Tasmania. Few travelers step off the mainland, and if they do they’re likely to spend their time in the big cities of Hobart, Australia, or Launceston. Of course, this makes the state’s forgotten northwest region that much more appealing.

Tasmania is home to some of the world’s most unique animals and plants, and many of them can be found in the Tarkine Wilderness Area. At just about 350,000 hectares, it covers a good portion of Tasmania’s northwest land region. Here you’ll find Australia’s largest temperate rainforest, and the last of the world’s Gondwanic old-growth rainforests. Keep your eyes peeled for Tasmanian devils, wombats, quolls, pademelons, possums, and wallabies. It’s also where you’ll see some of the world’s oldest trees, including the famous 2000-year-old Huon Pine. Visitors are welcome to explore the area on their own, but if you’d prefer the help of an expert guide, Tarkine Trails are the answer.

Southwest of The Tarkine is Cradle Mountain National Park, a must for nature lovers. The adventurous can climb the mountain in a day, or trek the Overland Track in five. If all that sounds too challenging, you can hike around the Visitors Centre before returning to the comfort of your hotel. Devils at Cradle also offer day tours that let you get close to the mountain’s most famous residents, Tasmanian devils.

Any time is a good time to visit Tasmania. However, prepare for warm weather in summer, and chilly conditions in winter. Spring is an ideal time to travel to Tasmania as the state’s wildflowers and native shrubs are in bloom.

If you’ve got the time, The Spirit of Tasmania cruise will take you from Melbourne to Devonport in a leisurely 11 hours. Alternatively, you can fly from Melbourne to Burnie and Devonport.

This is just a taste of the hidden secrets Australia holds, and it’s information you might not find in a run of the mill Australia travel guide in a bookstore. So before visiting this wonderful country, it’s worth doing some research. You’ll soon learn there are plenty of amazing places to see just off the beaten track.

Sydney Beaches
Sydney is renowned for its beach-side suburbs, which include Manly, Bondi and Cronulla plus plenty more. During summer, these beaches are packed full of swimmers, who flock to enjoy the city’s beautiful sandy beaches. Like Rio de Janiero and Los Angeles, Sydney is somewhat unique in that it’s a major metropolis surrounded by beautiful beaches, making it an ideal holiday spot. If you’re heading to the beach in Sydney, don’t forget your sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen, as the UV rays here are extremely high.
Trains, buses & ferries
A combination of all these modes of transport is the best way to enjoy both the tourist and resident experiences of Sydney. A rental car is best acquired for trips outside the CBD; the nearby Blue Mountains are just one of many scenic destinations you can reach from Sydney if you have a vehicle. Within Sydney city itself, however, public transport can very often be faster than driving. Sydney’s integrated ticketing system, permitting travel across trains, buses and ferries on a single ticket, makes traveling on any mode of public transport easy.
Of all the trips you can take in Sydney, the ferry to Manly is a great one for any tourist, offering great view of the Sydney skyline and its beautiful harbour. Ferries can take half-an-hour to travel from Circular Quay to Manly, a refreshing tour itself and a great way of seeing the city. To catch the Manly Ferry, you’ll need to head to the terminal at Circular Quay: easy to find right between the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Sydney Landmarks
The Centrepoint Tower, Sydney’s largest building, rises high about the Sydney cityscape and is an amazing sight to behold from Darling Harbour. The elevator ride and revolving restaurant at its top are well worth doing for the 360-degree panorama of Sydney on a fine day.Like any major destination, Sydney has its fair share of tourist attractions. In Sydney, though, it really is worth seeing all the famed attractions: Bondi Beach, Manly, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour…. All these places really do live up to the hype, and it’s great to cross them all off your list before you go on to enjoy all the rest of the things to do Sydney has to offer.
Sydney CBD
The central city of Sydney is an interesting mix of old and new architecture, parks, and streets, with many unique characters represented. Take a wander around and see what you find. Don’t miss The Rocks: this re-developed historic precinct is located just outside the main financial district, and offers a blend of the original colonial settlement and early Sydney architecture with the latest in Sydney culture.
Eating in Sydney
In multicultural Sydney you’ll be able to sample a variety of cuisines, including Asian, Indian, European and Middle Eastern dining. Fine food venues in Sydney can often be found overlooking the harbour, or along the waterfront at Darling Harbour and the Rocks, meaning a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The city has many tourist hangouts, however if you want to experience real Sydney cuisine, find where the locals eat and go there.
Prices are generally a little more expensive than Brisbane and other major Australian cities, in keeping with the higher cost of living here. There is a national Goods and Service Tax (GST), to which tips can be added at your discretion, though these are by no means necessary.
Sydney Fashion
Sydney is home to names like Akira Isogawa, Marcs, Morrisey and Collette Dinnigan, so for those fashionistas amongst us, you won’t want to skip taking a stroll down George Street for your fix. Take a look also at The Rocks precinct for boutique shopping and hip haute couture. Sydney is home to a lot of Australia’s glitz and glam, so fashion is a major commodity in Sydney. That said, most Australians are fairly laid-back about dress sense, so you won’t need to worry about dressing up unless it’s a formal occasion.

Working abroad is definitely a challenge, well to me it has been. I decided to take a gap year and come over here to work for a year. I had just entered a new country, got an apartment so the next obvious step was to look for work. I went to recruitment agencies (see review for more detail) to help me find work in such a big city.

First place I arrived was Sydney the most popular and well known city in Australia. I had already applied for a working holiday visa at home which meant I was entitled to work in the country legally. You need to have a visa which entitles you to work. Next step was to get a tax file number, without this you will not be given a job as you need it for tax purposes. This can be done online.

Now all the paperwork has been done you I needed to open a bank account as most jobs pay you directly into your account. I chose the Commonwealth Bank as I was told in the hostel I was staying at that this was the best one, however I am not sure if this is the case as I never investigated any other banks. We set up the account fairly easily, you needed 2 forms of ID and an Australian address. Sometimes if you are staying at a hostel they will accept this address but you need to make sure the hostel will accept and distribute your mail to one. One thing which at home I have never seen is that we had to pay an upkeeping fee on the account every month which is per person. As I had a joint account it was a month. It’s not much but I was annoyed I had to pay anything. Then it is advisable to get an Australian sim card as people will want a contact number. We chose Vodafone again as the hostel advised us. There are other networks maybe that are cheaper, yet again I did not check this out.

Next point of call is getting work. I needed to make sure I could get to work either by walking, public transport or I could have bought a car. Personally I used trains as I lived only 10 minutes away from the city centre by train so it was very handy. The most sensible thing then to do was look for work in the city centre (everyone called it the CBD – Central Business District), I’d never heard this term before it was all new to me.

Right so where to look for a job was my main problem at the start. The city was so big and there was so much information everywhere I was totally lost. I would advise people wanting to get a job in Australia to try the newspaper, sign up to recruitment agencies in person and there is recruitment website (an example is http://www.seek.com.au) which I found very useful.

The problem with the newspaper is that a lot of advertisements are vague and you are not sure what the employer wants. Quite often you are ringing up about permanent jobs and they don’t want travellers starting these jobs as in a few months they will have to recruit again so they want someone long term. My advice is to go to the casual or temporary section in the paper so you are not wasting time and money on phone calls you don’t need to.

The recruitment website http://www.seek.com.au is handy as you can filter what jobs you want to hear about, what area and lots of other useful filters can be applied so you only receive the updated and emails on jobs that are currently available in the area and for your needs. Sometimes the jobs are through recruitment agencies on this website but not always. You can apply for the job online hassle free.

Signing up to recruitment agencies in person will take up a considerable amount of your time. Get yourself a clear detailed map so you can find your way about that area. If you are having difficulties in finding recruitment agencies there are two agencies called Freespirit and Geoffrey Nathan they will send your CV out to various different recruitment agencies for you when you sign up with them. You then will get paid directly through them and not the recruitment agencies. They claim you will get more money with them as they will give you what they call a ‘living away from home allowance’, however in my experience I did not get extra money. I got the same as what I got with the recruitment agencies paying me direct but in the long run I got more without going through Freespirit and Geoffrey Nathan and without them paying me directly. The reason is that Freespirit and Geoffrey Nathan do give you the living away from home allowance and you get taxed less on your earnings but they also take their fee out of that. So you are being charged by them and the recruitment agency. So I have only half the tax to claim back when I get home or at the end of the tax year. When I have been paid directly I get to claim back the full tax that has been deducted. They are good to get you started but it really is better if you can find the agencies yourself, financially you will be better off. Jobs are also posted in hostels and the travellers contact point which is worth checking out.

The types of jobs available to you are generally different to what your usual job hunt gives you. Temping office work, retail work, cleaners, warehouse staff, labouring, farm work, fruit picking and bar or restaurant work are the general areas available to you.

+ Office work +
It is best to go through agencies for this type of work as it’s on a here and now basis, generally you get a call the day before or that morning letting you know an assignment is available. Your contract time can vary from one day to a year, sometimes extensions can be given and you get to work longer than you expected but you don’t be told unto the last minute. From what I can see it is the best paid work. You do need to have substantial work experience in an office, even though a lot of the jobs are simple and menial.

+ Retail Work and Restaurant/Bar work +
From my experience going around the shops asking who has work available is the most effective way of finding a job in this area.

+ Farm Work and Fruit Picking +
This type of work generally is badly paid and very hard work. Sometimes you will get free lodgings and food. Quite often its share lodgings like dorms you would get in a hostel. If you work a certain time in this type of work it is easier to get your visa extended and it helps a lot when applying for residency. Do bear in mind that you will be working long hours, getting low pay and it is very physical work which will exhaust you. The scorching heat will not help as it is also very humid here too. Anyone who does this type of work I admire as I don’t think I would ever have been able to.

*OVERALL*

My personal experiences of doing temping work have been varied. I have worked for reputable companies, however some of the jobs I have done have been very basic and extremely boring. Data entry gave me repetitive strain injury and my muscles ached so much I couldn’t sleep at night. I have learnt new skills and have done some projects. Overall I feel the Australian’s have been very friendly and work very much as a team in their offices. I have not experienced this at home but then I had only worked in a very small firm with only one other person in the office before coming here. There are lots of jobs here and sometimes they are finding it difficult to fill positions. Un-employment is very low here and people tend to feel more secure in their jobs and therefore seem happier. Maybe this has only been in the firms I have worked in and I have just been lucky. Either way it’s a great place to work with lots of opportunities.

Luxury Australia travel has got to be one of the best ways to see one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world. This huge continent which is split into 6 states and 2 territories covers an area of some 7,617,930 square kilometers or 2,941,299 square miles. The largest state alone, Western Australia, is approximately 5 times the size of Texas, USA!

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia and one of the most popular destinations for travellers to the continent. So what are the best things to see and do?

Luxury Australia travel does not have to be expensive – lifestyle in Australia comes as a given – it’s the way of life in this part of the world, so add a little luxury into your Australia travel with some of our suggestions.

Take a tour to Phillip Island, home to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, an easy 90 minute drive from Melbourne itself and you will discover a world of contrasts.

Billed as Victoria’s wildlife island, you will be surprised to find the Grand Prix circuit nestles close to the world famous Penguin parade, the Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm and the Nobbies Centre, a marine attraction where you can uncover the secrets of the Southern Seas with interactive displays allowing you to intermingle with seals, sharks and dolphins that abound in these waters.

I did say that it was a world of contrasts, so don’t forget the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory in your itinerary, where you can buy the delectable hand-made chocolates made on the Island.

Take a spectacular sunrise balloon ride over the Yarra Valley, one of Victoria’s beautiful winery regions. Home to 90 vineyards, surrounded by mountains you fly for approximately an hour over the early morning vineyards before ending your experience with a sumptuous champagne breakfast.

Café culture abounds in St Kilda and you will want to browse this fashionable bayside suburb of Melbourne with its diverse range of shops and eating venues. Don’t forget the Luna Park amusement park built in 1912, complete with its wooden roller coaster and other historic rides.

For the sports fans amongst you there is the very popular Sports Lovers Tour. Billed as city sightseeing with a difference you will explore the history and excitement of sporting Melbourne. Whichever sport is your particular favourite, be it tennis, cricket, rugby or football, find yourself sitting in the coaches’ box, imagining filing that important media story in the media facilities or smelling the liniment in the changing rooms!

For dinner with a difference, the Colonial tram car dinner is perfect! 1920′s splendour, but with modern day facilities so that not even a crystal glass quivers in your cosy, colonial period dining car. One way glass ensures privacy while traditional silver and white linen don the tables. This is one train ride you won’t forget in a hurry and booking is a must with the restaurant selling out weeks in advance.

Hop on the City Circle Tram ride for a free central Melbourne tour. Steeped in old world charm, these 1920′s brown and gold liveried tram cars are an appealing way to discover the city centre sights. The conductor on board provides valuable knowledge about the tourist attractions you might wish to see.

Spectacular Rhododendrons greet you as you head to The Dandenongs for the Spring flowering. Less than an hours drive from Melbourne, lies this rich hillside area which grows all manner of good things to eat, drink and appreciate, such as the display of Spring bulbs, Devonshire Cream teas and the Puffing Billy Steam Train that gently meanders its way through the beautiful landscape.

I think you will agree that luxury Australia travel is what you make of it. The luxury is in the doing!

I invite you to use these ideas to make the most of your luxury Australia travel and Melbourne.

Going to a new country can be very exciting but it is natural to have some concerns. This is also the case for those who visit Australia. Travel guides can allay all concerns. Not only can you make use of travel guides in compact areas such as towns and cities but you can also use guides to take your further a field. There are many places in Australia where it is necessary to have the services of a guide. One of the most obvious reasons in such a location is the size of the country. It is no exaggeration to say you can get lost in a country that is as vast as Australia.

It is especially necessary to make use of a guide if you intend to visit locations that are not on the tourist route. There can be no doubting the uniqueness of the landscape and the culture in Australia. Travel guides can take you to places inhabited by the indigenous people of the land. There is a growing worldwide interest in the culture of the Aborigine people. This is an excellent reason to want to see and experience how the Aborigines live. Many travelers are fascinated by their belief system and how it intertwines in their relationship with nature. The survival skills of the Aborigine people in what appears to be desolate and rugged conditions is awe inspiring.

What is paramount for a visitor to this country is to make use of a guide or guides who are adequately trained. If you visit a reputable website on travel in Australia you will easily find information on the highest caliber of guides in Australia. Travel guides not only show you the way to wherever you are traveling but they are a mine of information on the surroundings, vegetation, animals and people. It is their experience of Australia that is also able to protect you from getting lost or wandering off a road or path in the remote regions of the country.
